DON’T KIT-NAP KITTENS! Instead, Watch and Wait
It's spring in Desoto County. You suddenly find a pile of neonatal kittens, but don't see mom in the vicinity. Don’t panic! Keep in mind that Mom typically never goes away for very long or very far, but as she’s tasked with keeping all of these little guys adequately nourished and hydrated, she must also find food and water to fuel her own body.
As long as the kittens respond to touch and don't feel cold, the best way to help the kittens is to remove yourself from the immediate vicinity for an hour to ensure Mom feels safe enough to return. If you're unsure whether Mom returned or not, a light ring of flour can be sprinkled around the litter-- far enough away that the kittens don't end up in the flour themselves, but close and thick enough to you to see later if the flour ring has been recently disturbed. Don’t Kit-Nap Healthy Kittens.
Chances are Mom is just refueling her body with sustenance to continue caring for her babies and will return to them shortly as long as no perceived threat (you) is present.
Remember: Never feed kittens cows’ milk. KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) is a powder that, when mixed with water in the correct proportions, is the ideal substitute to nourish and support frail, vulnerable, and completely dependent kittens when Mom’s vital milk is not an immediately available option. KMR is offered In- Store locally from Walmart, Kroger, Petco, and a variety of other retailers. Miracle nipples are by far the most successful brand of supplemental small animal nursing supplies for bottle babies who have struggled to sufficiently nurse using other nipples or may not be reaching the daily recommended nutritional intake necessary to promote and maintain a healthy weight. Amazon has Miracle Nipples for sale here, or in an emergency, reach out to your local shelter as quickly as possible for assistance with essential lifesaving kitten supplies.
The National Kitten Coalition’s eLearning Center offers free access to their entire library of previously recorded webinars simply by registering for a free account — all aimed at helping us keep our community’s hundreds of thousands of kittens born during North Mississippi’s annual Kitten Season as healthy, happy, and safe as possible.
Please note NKC also offers various Free Webinars, such as Kitten 101, on their YouTube.
No Mom? No Problem!
Although kittens’ #1 best chance of survival will always be with Mom, sometimes that just isn’t an option, and since newborn kittens require round the clock care, it’s up to you— yes, YOU— to keep the little fur balls alive long enough for them to transform into, well, slightly bigger fur balls (eventually, with four distinctive legs) that are no longer completely dependent on hoomans for survival— or about 6 weeks of age. How are you supposed to do that, exactly? First, relax. The ASPCA has you covered with their free Neonatal Kitten Care Guide.
Second, like human babies, time is of the utmost essence when dealing with newborn kittens, so if you don't feel confident in your newfound mothering role, contact your local animal shelter for immediate assistance and instructions.
Neonatal kittens (less than 4 weeks old) that have been separated from Momma Cat require a replacement Momma within a couple hours after being separated from her or will not survive for long afterwards. Frequent feedings throughout the day, in 2-3 hour intervals, are necessary to provide sufficient nourishment to maintain a healthy weight and promote regular and steady weight gain in newborn kittens, yes, including feedings every 2-3 hours throughout the night. Learn what your next steps should be according to the experts.
The younger a kitten is when it’s introduced to positive experiences with humans, the easier it’ll be to “socialize,” or learn to be friendly (social) towards humans rather than frightened by them. If the kitten you’ve found is less than roughly 12 weeks/3 months of age, then with a little patience, time, and determination, you can probably turn that hissy, extra spicy fur taco you found in the backyard shed into a friendly, adoptable fur-baby burrito who no longer fears or avoids human interaction starting right MEOW!
Around 6 weeks of age, kittens will begin to gain independence by losing their food source— Mom. They will either find a new one, or take it upon themselves to hunt for one alone with only their inherited survival instinct to guide them. This is the ideal opportunity to form the special trust in humans they’ll require to enjoy a happy, safe, socialized, and indoor life. The experts at Feral Cat Focus have created a “Taming Feral Kittens” How-To Guide to reference for getting started, and the best techniques to follow to help promote you and your kitten’s success in the kitten socialization process.
